Learned Behavior, Overcoming Biases, Part 2 (Leave our Biases at the Foot of the Cross)
Step 2: Leaving our Biases at the Foot of the Cross
I'm a black man living in America, so when I say I've been the recepient of bias thinking and behavior more times than I can count, please believe me. I can spot the language, behavior, action/inaction a mile away. Even with that being an unfortunate fact, I will be the first to admit that I too struggle with certain biases, maybe not in the way I've often been the recepient of, but none-the-less, bias exist in every person and is like a thread that seames its way throughout the fabrics of society.
There is no better place to retire bias thinking and behavior than at the foot of the Cross. How do we literally do what Evangelist Billy Graham has encouraged us to do? I would like to answer my question by encouraging and challenging you to go into your prayer closet and tell God you're sorry. While there, freely confess that you're wrong, and before you leave, don't forget to put an end to justifying your thoughts and behaviors by totally surrendering all to God.
That's right, I encourage you to:
A one-time experience involving prayer, confession, and surrender does not mean that your biases will immediately and permanently end your struggles with such thinking and behavior? When triggered by childhood development and cultural beliefs you've been exposed to most of your life, biases have a way of raising it's ugly head again, again, and again. You will likely have to slay that sinful beast a few times before experiencing total freedom. Remember, with each battle, we serve the kind of God that replaces our judgements with His grace. When it comes to God's grace, all of life's challenges are balanced at the Cross.
Seek forgiveness, practice humility, and don't be afraid to surrender all core motivating factors to God. What will be the outcome? You will Walk in Newness. We will talk about that tomorrow.
