In my book, Conflicts Within: A Journey through Real and Lasting Change, I quote Patrick Spencer Johnson, who said, "Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people." I used the above quote for two reasons. First, that quote clearly teaches us the importance of being honest with ourselves (integrity). Second, we also learn that it's equally important to speak truth to others.

Earlier this week, I was blessed to observe a men's support group. I will not share any details from my observation or participation, but I can say that what I witnessed was the very definition of integrity. I watched men be honest with themselves and speak truth to one another. What I witnessed reminded me of a quote from Billy Graham: "Integrity is the glue that holds our way of life together." I saw a whole lot of glue holding life together.

As we witness the very opposite of integrity being exemplified and amplified by others today, I encourage each of us to make every effort to embody integrity by being honest with ourselves and speaking truth to others with love.

This is what integrity looks like:

  • I own my mistakes.
  • I see my commitments through.
  • I value God's image of humanity in all people.
  • I allow my actions to complement/match my words.

Be the glue that helps hold our way of life together.
