There are many things in society that sadden me, but if I had to choose the number-one thing, it would be how lost and confused many men are today. When it comes to boys developing into men, society can be at times schizophrenic, as evidenced by bombarding boys/men with so many mixed messages:
"Boys don't cry."
"Toughen up."
"Don't show weakness."
"Don't show emotions or be vulnerable."
There are so many mixed messages when it comes to masculinity. Social pressures coupled with confusing messages often lead to a mental health crisis, which gives birth to isolation, depression, and a suicide rate that's three times higher than that of women.
Many men are constantly asking themselves internal questions like:
Should I open the door for her?
Should I offer to buy dinner?
Am I being man enough?
Which should be my priority when it comes to being feared or respected?
Boys and men are facing mounting pressures today, but despite those pressures, there's one thing that has proven to be more effective than anything else, and that is, providing men with the opportunity to join together with other men in a safe and open atmosphere where men can talk honestly about life's triumphs and challenges.
My church will soon participate in a men's discipleship training. For 8 weeks, we're going to learn a lot about manhood and how we can mentor other men who need guidance.
I would like to invite other men to join us. To express your interest, simply:
