"... consider it nothing but joy when you fall into all sorts of trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you will be perfect and complete, not deficient in anything." James 1:2-4

We should all know that life comes with good and bad days, so I'm not going to pretend for a moment that life will always be filled with happiness. Although every day will not be sunshine, that doesn't mean that our lives cannot be filled with joy even during difficult times. James tells us to, "... consider it nothing but joy when you fall into all sorts of trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you will be perfect and complete, not deficient in anything." James 1:2-4

I often revisit the above scripture, especially when life doesn't go as planned. I revisit the scripture because I've learned that there's a vast difference between joy and happiness. To explain the difference, I would like to quote author Meg Bucher from her article, "The Beauty of Seeking Both Joy and Happiness in Christ". Meg said, "The difference between joy and happiness is substantial. We often assume that the fleeting feeling of happiness, giddy laughter and contentment in the comforts of life is akin to the joy we experience in Jesus. But joy supernaturally sustains our souls in seasons of heartache, injustice, and sorrow. Enduring the valleys of life is nearly impossible without the life-giving fuel of joy in Christ...

As you prepare for what life has in store for you today, carry this Discipleship Devotional in your spirit, heart, and mind. Remember, as Christ gives you grace upon grace upon grace, you will be able to live a joy-filled life no matter the challenges you face.
