"Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. We cultivate passion and purpose when we cling to our faith and trust in God." I Timothy 6:12 (ESV)

Before my retirement, I worked in mental health for twenty-five years. Mental health professionals know when the time for retirement has come, because you can only listen to so many problems before it starts to impact your own personal well-being. Despite that fact, there are certain aspects of counseling I will never develop a low tolerance for, such as:

Pre-marital Counseling

DivorceCare

Grief, Loss, and Separation

To this day, I still love doing pre-marital counseling for many reasons. Since I don't have time or space to write all of those reasons down, I'll summarize by saying that many couples, to this very day, still spend more time preparing for their wedding than they do when it comes to preparing for marriage, which is a significant reason why fifty percent of marriages in the United States end in divorce.

I'm also committed to helping people work through the devastation of divorce, because I, too, have traveled that road and experienced the brokenness that follows the tearing apart of a marriage. My love for helping people dealing with grief, loss, and separation remains dear to my heart as well, because my deceased wife (Brenda) and I were together for twenty-two years before her death. The pain of such separation and the complex healing process that follows is something I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy.

All of the above areas of counseling are something I've done many times without charge to support a non-profit ministry. There are some things in life that each person has and/or develops a passion for. When you know your calling, it makes all the difference in the world. Have you identified what you are passionate about? Is there something in your life that never gets old, no matter how many times you do it? If so, I hope and pray you are now doing what you love and are passionate about.

As you prepare for what life has in store for you today, and you determine that you haven't identified your passion, today is a good day to do something about it. Remember the words of Hunter S. Thompson who said, "Anything that gets your blood racing is probably worth doing."
