The Common Good

"But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Titus 3:9 NIV

The state of Virginia is called the "Commonwealth". I began to wonder if the word commonwealth had any relationship to the common good, and it does. During the 17th century, a gentleman named John Locke described the political community in Virginia as a government founded on the common good. What exactly does that mean? It simply means that the government believes that its purpose is the common good, or collective welfare of its citizens. For example, John Adams eloquently said, "Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness of the people; and not for the profit, honor, or private interest of any one man, family, or class of men."

When I study history and read the statements of people like John Locke, John Adams, and many others, I can't help but wonder what those founders would think of today's America. Today, the federal government shutdown is entering its thirty-sixth day. Not only that, for the first time, SNAP benefits have been weaponized, and attempts are being made to use them as a bargaining chip while families are hungry and don't know where their next meal is coming from. Many of our elected representatives could learn a lot not only by reading, but also by practicing the words of the founders.

As you set aside time to prepare for what life has in store for you today, remember to focus on more than just your needs and concerns. Don't just think about how difficult life may be for you right now; think about those who are less fortunate than you are.

There are times in life when the well-being of others must be placed above our own self-interest. Pray that those we elect into office will learn to set the common good of the people above their own political interests.
