Benjamin Banneker’s (1731–1806) father was formerly enslaved, and his mother was a former indentured servant, though Banneker himself was born free. He was self-educated, but his lack of formal education didn’t hold him back. Banneker became a surveyor, astronomer, and, most notably, an almanac writer.

In those almanacs, Banneker included personal writings, tidal information, medical information, astronomical calculations, and information on insects, such as bees and locusts. He was also an outspoken abolitionist who exchanged letters with Thomas Jefferson, the U.S. Secretary of State at the time.

When you read the full story of Benjamin Banneker, it will likely shock you. How could a self-educated man achieve so much? Today, we have tons of educational resources at our fingertips that are not fully taken advantage of. If Benjamin were alive today, in my sanctified imagination, I can see him walking and/or running to school if he had to. He was truly a go-getter.

Don't let your lack of education be your excuse for not chasing your dreams. Among my siblings, I was the first to attend college and earn a bachelor's and master's degree. Though my siblings did not attend college or earn a college degree, none of that stopped them from getting after it, whatever it may be.

If you need to hit the reset button, don't be afraid to do just that. Go after the dreams God has placed upon your heart.
