Today, we honor the contributions of presidents throughout the history of the United States of America. Two of those presidents are widely recognized as the primary reasons Presidents' Day was created and is celebrated annually. Would you happen to know which two presidents I'm referring to? You probably weren't expecting a quiz this morning, so I'll go ahead and give you the answer: Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Both presidents were born during the month of February (12th Lincoln and 22nd Washington). Presidents' Day is not celebrated solely for their birthdays; it honors much more than that. President George Washington is credited with leading the Revolutionary War, while President Abraham Lincoln is widely credited with preserving the Union at great cost, including his own life. In addition, history shows that President George Washington could have remained president and become a king, but instead of becoming drunk with power, he ensured that the presidency's power was passed to whoever would be elected next.
Today, we honor all U.S. presidents, as this day is set aside to celebrate leadership, unity, and constitutional principles. As we celebrate Presidents' Day today, I encourage each of my subscribers to remember the words of former President Jimmy Carter, who said, "We have become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams." President Jimmy Carter
