"The Chicago Way - Don't Bring a Knife to a Gun Fight"

Part 1, Belt of Truth

I introduced my new series last week (Thursday) by asking what this American folklore and Western gun culture phrase have to do with being a Christian. I informed you that your answer depends on how unprepared you are during spiritual warfare.

Ephesians 6:14-17 (please read) provides the blueprint for being fully armored spiritually. Today, Part 1 of my 6-part series deals with the first piece of armor, which is, the belt of truth. History teaches us that the military uniform of Roman soldiers included the wearing of a thick leather belt. This belt secured their clothing, supported vital organs, and securely kept their sword in place and readily availiable for easy access in battle. Let's take a look at this portion of the Roman soldier's uniform from a spiritual perspective. Spiritually, the belt of truth represents God's truth. The more time we spend in God's Word, the more secure we are in His truth.

To avoid bringing your knife to a gun fight, your first line of defense is TRUTH!. Satan is the Father of Lies (John 8:44); the best way to combat his lies is with God's truth. I did not say your truth, I said, God's truth. I emphasize this point because many things change throughout life. Cultures change, trends change, values change, and beliefs often change, but none of those changes will ever eclipse and/or change the fact that God's truth remains the same.

If you plan to stop bringing your knife to a gun fight there are three things I encourage you to do:

  1. Make time for the study of God's Word. His Word is His truth.
  2. Stop following the crowd because that's the direction everyone else is going.
  3. Align with God's truth despite what trends and cultures believe.

When you find yourself being attacked with lies don't answer with your own lies; answer with God's truth.
