"The Chicago Way - Don't Bring a Knife to a Gun Fight"

Part 5, Helmet of Salvation

Part-4 of our Chicago Way series talked about "The Shield of Faith." Today, let's visit Part-5 of our 6-part series by exploring the Helmet of Salvation.

The Roman Soldier's helmet was and is a vital part of their armor. Today, helmets remain a part of every soldier's uniform and for good reason. The helmet protects the head and the brain from fatal blows, and other catastrophic head injuries. The helmet continues to serve as a vital piece of equipment that continues to protect soldiers today.

What's the deeper soulful message behind this illustration? Your spiritual helmet of salvation plays a vital role in your aresenal of armor. Your spiritual helmet protects the space wherein your mental capacity filled with thoughts, thinking, and decision-making reside. As a mental health professional with twenty-five (25) years of experience, there's a common phrase I've used with former clients more times than I can count. Today, I want to share my popular phrase with you by saying, "Don't rent that space out in your head."

The Word of God is your helmet of salvation and it protects your head and your heart by serving as a mighty shield. Yes, your spiritual helmet keeps the Advisary from setting up permanent residence in your mind and heart. Here's a few things your Helmet of Salvation shields you from:

  1. Inappropriate thoughts and feelings.
  2. Developing and maintaining sinful lifestyle patterns thoughts and action.
  3. Always seeing the class half-empty rather than half-full.

According to Philippians 4:8, the Helmet of Salvation fixes your thoughts on heavenly things. "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, lovely, or admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things."

To avoid bringing a spiritual knife to a gun fight, you need to be thinking on good things, and you need to stop renting out space in your mind to the adversary. While putting on your spiritual armor, please don't forget your helmet.

Are you wearing?
